Conference papers
Papers
presented at the spring conference are published in UK Irrigation.
Technical Monographs
UKIA has sponsored the the publication of a number of technical monographs
and conference proceedings. brief details are presented below. Full copies
are available for downloading from the members only website.
Trickle Irrigation of Row Crops (1988)
"Trickle Irrigation of Row Crops" is based on research work carried out in
the Department of Water Management at Silsoe College. Its aim is to provide guidelines for
farmers and irrigation advisers on the use of trickle irrigation for row crops and
especially potatoes. This publication is a practical manual which communicates the basic
requirements of a trickle irrigation installation, from design considerations, through
system components to system management. One of the major claims made on behalf of trickle
irrigation is its cost-effectiveness, and the authors have fully covered the subject of
evaluating results, both quantitatively and qualitatively.
Irrigating Potatoes (1988)
This contains most of the papers presented at the first UKIA conference on
"Irrigating Potatoes". The conference considered the whole issue of irrigating
potatoes, from crop responses to water through equipment selection and operation to crop
storage. Published in 1988, this highlights how little is known in some areas! There is by
no means unanimous agreement amongst the contributors. As with so many things in
agriculture, there are no easy answers - farmers still need to use their skill and
experience to interpret and apply to their own farms what is recommended by scientists,
engineers and economists. This publication is still very relevant to current issues.
Nitrates and Irrigation (1993)
Nitrates and Irrigation contains papers presented at a UKIA conference on
"Nitrates and Irrigation". The papers cover many of the background issues
relevant to the nitrate problem and provide much of the information that is required to
assess the likely problems of nitrate leaching in irrigated soils. The papers also
highlight where further research is required to allow a full impact assessment for given
situations.
Irrigating Potatoes (1993)
Irrigating Potatoes, published in 1993, contains papers presented at the second UKIA
conference on "Irrigating Potatoes", by leading authorities on the subject. In
part, this is an update of Technical Monograph 2 and considers all aspects of irrigating
the potato crop, from defining the benefits, through choosing equipment, scheduling,
diseases, fertiliser requirements and the choice of cultivars. There is also a chapter
on
soil management in relation to water conservation.
British Standards
It is not so well known that there are now many British and
International Standards for irrigation equipment and its testing and
installation. Of particular note for UK irrigators is BS 7562 parts 1 to 5 which
covers the planning, design and installation of irrigation schemes specifically
written for UK conditions. Click here for the full
list.
